Perception of Lightness and Brightness of Achromatic Surface Color and Impression of Illumination
نویسنده
چکیده
The relationships between lightness and brightness responses under the condition that achromatic "surface color " appears and the relationships between perceived illumination and brightness were examined. The Ss were required to make categorical judgments upon both lightness and brightness of the test patches presented on black and white backgrounds and upon the over-all illumination in the visual field. Conclusion is as follows: the functions of lightness judgments and of brightness judgments are different, and the relation between them depends on the luminance of the background. Brightness responses for a test surface depends not only on the surface luminance but also on the background or the adjacent ield luminance. The similarity of the stimulus correlate of brightness to that of perceived illumination is also argued.

What visual illusions tell us about underlying neural mechanisms and observer strategies for tackling the inverse problem of achromatic perception
Research in lightness perception centers on understanding the prior assumptions and processing strategies the visual system uses to parse the retinal intensity distribution (the proximal stimulus) into the surface reflectance and illumination components of the scene (the distal stimulus-ground truth). It is agreed that the visual system must compare different regions of the visual image to solv...

Logvinenko and Maloney (2006) measured perceived dissimilarities between achromatic surfaces placed in two scenes illuminated by neutral lights that could differ in intensity. Using a novel scaling method, they found that dissimilarities between light surface pairs could be represented as a weighted linear combination of two dimensions, "surface lightness" (a perceptual correlate of the differe...

The majority of work in lightness perception has evaluated the perception of lightness using flat, matte, two-dimensional surfaces. In such contexts, the amount of light reaching the eye contains a conflated mixture of the illuminant and surface lightness. A fundamental puzzle of lightness perception is understanding how it is possible to experience achromatic surfaces as specific achromatic sh...
متن کاملGamut relativity: a new computational approach to brightness and lightness perception.
This article deconstructs the conventional theory that "brightness" and "lightness" constitute perceptual dimensions corresponding to the physical dimensions of luminance and reflectance, and builds in its place the theory that brightness and lightness correspond to computationally defined "modes," rather than dimensions, of perception. According to the theory, called gamut relativity, "blackne...
